Dates Open: January 20 – August 11, 2024
"Fashions fade, style is eternal." —Yves Saint Laurent
My time at the fashion exhibit "Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style" has been a real pleasure.
To your left is an image of me posing for the snapchat Augmented Reality Mirrors. They feature three dresses where one, I pose in a 1955 “Soirée de Paris” dress by Yves Saint Laurent
Such and interesting and fun activity to do before viewing the exhibit.
First Impressions
When entering the room for the snapchat Augmented Reality Mirrors, I felt excited to try it out. You wait in line and slowly move your way towards the first mirror. The virtual dress comes to life over your silhouette and forms to your body. The dress shrinks your waist and
limbs so the dress appears more form fitting. I had to laugh because my body had some disproportions. After I took the photos I went straight to the fashion exhibit.
Touring the Fashion Exhibit
The room was beautifully displayed with high fashion dressed mannequins. When you first enter you start off with dresses as early from the 1800's. As I progressed through I noticed each section has historical information regarding the styles of clothing and how fashion changed during that era. Observing each garment made me feel I was transported to that specific time in history.
Pros and Cons
Pros: As a viewer you get to learn about the history of fashion and how it shapes our culture to today. Its a great place for artist of all backgrounds to gain inspiration and understand where various high fashion styles began.
The overall exhibit is enlightening, engaging, and fun.
Cons: If you like to take your time
(like me) observing each piece, I would suggest going early in the day to get the full experience. I went late in the afternoon and was lucky enough to finish before closing. When its near closing time you may feel rushed with the 5 min warnings.
A Definite Must See!
"Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style" is a wonderful experience for all ages. Even if you are not into the fashion scene or history, it will still amaze you. There is a little something for everyone, with the variety of diverse styles and backgrounds in each high fashion piece.
Saturdays are always free admission. The only price you pay is for the featured exhibit and its worth it.
